In May, the city welcomed Cllr Brenda Hindmarsh as Newcastle’s next Lord Mayor at a Civic Centre ceremony.
The new Lord Mayor, who represents Fawdon, took over from Cllr Mike Cookson and will be supported by Gitta Faulkner who is now the new Lady Mayoress.
During her civic year Cllr Hindmarsh is supporting three charities, the Charlie Crowe Appeal, The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company and Riding for the Disabled at Stepney Bank Stables.
Westgate councillor Geoff O’Brien was officially appointed as the city’s new Sheriff and Deputy Lord Mayor during the same ceremony.
Cllr Hindmarsh is a former state registered and district nurse and also qualified as a midwife. She’s been a member of the Liberal Democrat Executive since May 2005 and is involved with the Learning Disability Partnership Board.
Before taking over as the new Lord Mayor Cllr Hindmarsh said, “I was delighted to serve as the city’s Sheriff and I am now looking forward to the challenge of becoming Newcastle’s Lord Mayor. “It has been my privilege to meet so many community groups and visitors to the city in my previous role and I hope to continue to support these and other community groups, as well as some of the city’s good causes.”
