These maps (pdf, 2.6Mb) show how the views of ward residents compare to the city average on a number of key questions from the survey.

Due to the relatively small numbers of residents surveyed in each ward the results are subject to sampling error. Small differences of up to 10 percentage points between ward scores may not be large enough to be considered as a significant difference.

Council Performance

1. Satisfied with the way the authority runs things

• Residents in the east end are much less satisfied with the council than residents elsewhere in the city. But generally levels of satisfaction are fairly consistent in most parts of the city.

2. Agree that you can influence decisions locally

• Parts of the city centre are notably more happy with their involvement in local decisions. Otherwise there is some consistency in the results but residents in North Heaton and Denton appear much less satisfied than the average.

Neighbourhood Issues

3. Satisfaction with the local area as a place to live

• Many areas in the north of the city show up very positively on this issue. But residents in riverside wards, especially in the east of the city are much less happy.

4. People from different backgrounds get on well together in your local area

• Residents living in the central and northern areas of the city, including wards with the highest concentrations of ethnic minority populations in the city, are more positive about this issue. Residents in the outer west and riverside wards see this as more of a problem.

5. People feel safe outside after dark in your local area

• This indicator has a very patchy distribution with the areas of concern scattered throughout the city. Again, riverside wards seem to be areas of more concern although some wards to the north such as Fawdon and Woolsington also show up.

6. Satisfied with the choice of housing in your local area

• People living in the east end riverside appear less satisfied with local housing choice. There are several areas in the city where people are much happier with the choice available to them. 

Anti-social Behaviour

7. Parents not taking responsibility for the behaviour of their children

• This shows up to be a problem in riverside wards especially where deprivation levels tend to be higher. There are also concerns being expressed by residents in the Fawdon/Kenton/Blakelaw areas.

8. Teenagers hanging around on the streets

• Residents in Gosforth, Jesmond and Heaton are more relaxed about young people in their communities than the majority of the city where this seems to be seen as a problem.

9. Rubbish and litter lying around

• A problem in the riverside wards and around the city centre. But there are also signs of concerns in a corridor northwards towards Fawdon.

Services

10. Satisfied with doorstep recycling

• There appears to be a tendency for this to be a concern in areas of higher density older housing although residents of Walker are amongst the happiest in the city on this issue.

11. Satisfied with sports, leisure facilities and events

• This is clearly a problem for people who live in the north of the city furthest away from key sports and leisure facilities.

12. Satisfied with parks and open spaces

• People with ready access to the major parks and open spaces in the city are most happy with this issue. Residents of the east end riverside wards are the least happy.

13. Satisfied with libraries

• The results across the city show a satisfactory level of satisfaction with more than half of residents in each ward happy with the service – and generally a lot more. The closure of the city centre library has affected the result for Ouseburn.

14. Satisfied with the local bus service

• Residents living in the outer areas of the city are less satisfied than those living near to the centre although North Jesmond and Fawdon stand out as showing local concerns more strongly than surrounding wards. However, overall levels of satisfaction are quite high.
