Information from the 2007-08 Residents' Survey

The Residents’ Survey is an annual postal survey undertaken in the autumn to seek information from Newcastle adult residents on their perceptions of council services and neighbourhood issues. The following table details key findings of the 2007/8 survey for the ward and the city as a whole. It is followed by a summary of the key perceptions of the ward’s residents about Council services and their local area.

Positive findings

  • More ward residents were satisfied with the local area as a place to live than the City average (86% compared to 75%).
  • More ward residents thought that the local area had got better or had not changed much in the last year than the City average (90% compared to 75%).
  • More ward residents agreed that the local area is a place where people from different backgrounds get on well together than the City average (80% compared to 65%).
  • More ward residents felt safe when outside in their local area after dark than the City average (54% compared to 41%).
  • More ward residents were satisfied with the choice of housing in the local area than the City average (75% compared to 66%).
  • Anti-social behaviour is not seen as a significant problem in this ward compared to other parts of the city.
  • More ward residents were satisfied with the following services than the City average:
    • The waste collection service (93% compared to 86%).
    • Parks and open spaces (82% compared to 76%).

Possible areas for attention

  • Fewer ward residents thought that there were sufficient opportunities for participation in local decision-making than the City average (27% compared to 37%).
  • Fewer ward residents were satisfied with the following services than the City average:  
    • Sports, leisure facilities and events (47% compared to 55%).
    • Libraries (58% compared to 65%).
    • Local bus services (61% compared to 66%).
    • Public transport information (45% compared to 55%).
