Advice about services for children, young people and families

Newcastle Families Information Service (FIS) offers a free and impartial service providing up-to-date information, advice and assistance. This includes a wide range of services and activities for children, young people, parents and carers, including:

  • childcare (childminders, nurseries, playgroups, crèches, out of school and holiday clubs)
  • Sure Start Children’s Centres
  • parent and toddler groups
  • toy libraries
  • parenting support
  • things to do and places to go, including sports, holiday activities, play and leisure
  • extended services through schools services
  • support and activities for children with disabilities and their families
  • advice and counselling services clubs and organisations – for parents, carers and young people
  • volunteering and community organisations
  • health services
  • financial support for childcare
  • working or training in childcare and
  • becoming a registered childminder
  • school admissions
  • adult learning

FIS also provide information and advice about school admissions. Please contact us if you need help or assistance with the admissions process or visit the school admissions section.

The Families Information Service (FIS) also work closely with our school choice adviser who can provide more in-depth impartial support about the admissions process should you require it.

  • Friday, 8.30am - 4.30pm

You can call or drop in during these times to visit a member of staff face to face at our service point in the Customer Service Centre. Alternatively, you can send us an email or leave a message on our answer phone. If this is not suitable, we could arrange an out of hours appointment at a time and venue to suit your needs.
