In Newcastle there are six local authority nursery schools and lots of nursery classes attached to schools. They provide early education for children aged three to five years and offer opportunities to play and learn through structured activities.
Unlike day nurseries, nursery schools and classes are only open during the school term. You will not have to pay for any time that your child is at the setting. Most nursery classes will only offer a part time place, either five mornings or five afternoons per week.
Every child aged three of four is guaranteed 15 hours per week funded early education from the term after they turn 3 for at least 38 weeks a year. Places at nursery schools and nursery classes in Newcastle are limited but you can also access these funded sessions at a range of private, voluntary and independent settings. These include day nurseries, playgroups, pre-schools and some independent schools.
For more information on free early year’s entitlement please see the help with childcare costs section.
Having a place in a nursery class does not mean that your child will be given priority when you apply for a place at the attached first or primary school.
