Information from the 2007/08 Residents' Survey

The Residents’ Survey is an annual postal survey undertaken in the autumn to seek information from Newcastle adult residents on their perceptions of council services and neighbourhood issues. The following table details key findings of the 2007/8 survey for the ward and the city as a whole. It is followed by a summary of the key perceptions of the ward’s residents about Council services and their local area.

Possible areas for attention

  • Fewer residents were satisfied with their local area as a place to live than the City average (49% compared to 75%).
  • Fewer residents thought that their local area had got better / not changed much in the last year than the City average (60% compared to 75%).
  • Fewer residents were satisfied with the changes that have taken place in the area in the last two years than the City average (36% compared to 48%).
  • Fewer residents were satisfied with opportunities for participation in local decision-making than the City average (27% compared to 37%).
  • Fewer residents felt safe when outside in their local area after dark than the City average (24% compared to 41%).
  • Fewer residents felt safe when outside in Newcastle city centre after dark than the City average (20% compared to 32%).
  • Fewer residents were satisfied with the choice of housing in their local areas than the City average (45% compared to 66%).
  • Fewer residents were satisfied with the way the Council runs things than the City average (48% compared to 64%).
  • Fewer residents thought that the Council keeps residents well-informed about the services and benefits it provides than the City average (48% compared to 64%).
  • More residents than the City average thought that the anti-social behaviour issues mentioned in the survey were problems in their local area
  • Fewer residents than the City average were satisfied with the following services:
    • The waste collection service (73% compared to 86%)
    • Doorstep recycling (53% compared to 59%)
    • Local recycling facilities (46% compared to 54%)
    • Keeping land free of litter and refuse (42% compared to 61%)
    • Parks and open spaces (60% compared to 76%)
    • Public transport information (45% compared to 55%).
