Information from the 2007/08 Residents' Survey

The Residents’ Survey is an annual postal survey undertaken in the autumn to seek information from Newcastle adult residents on their perceptions of council services and neighbourhood issues. Below is a summary of the key perceptions of the ward’s residents about Council services and their local area. The following table has full details of the key findings of the 2007/8 survey for the ward and the city as a whole.

Positive findings

  • More residents thought that their local area had got better / not changed much in the last year than the City average (82% compared to 75%).
  • More residents were satisfied with the changes that had taken place in their local area in the last two years than the City average (82% compared to 75%).
  • More residents were satisfied with opportunities for participation in local decision-making than the City average (42% compared to 37%).
  • More residents were satisfied with the doorstep recycling services than the City average (70% compared to 59%).
  • More residents were satisfied with the local recycling facilities than the City average (61% compared to 54%).
  • More residents were satisfied with libraries than the City average (70% compared to 65%).
  • More residents were satisfied with the local bus service than the City average (77% compared to 66%).

Possible areas for attention

  • Fewer residents than the City average felt that their local area is a place where people from different backgrounds get on well together (57% compared to 65%)
  • Fewer residents felt safe when outside in their local area after dark (35% compared to 41%).
  • More residents than the City average felt that the following anti-social behaviour issues were a problem in their local area:
    • Parents not taking responsibility for behaviour of their children
    • People not treating other people with respect and consideration
    • Teenagers hanging around on the streets
    • Vandalism, graffiti and other deliberate damage to property and vehicles
